It happens, and it's nobody's fault, not really. It crashed yesterday morning (EST on Nov. 28) and it's taking a while for it to come back online. First they tried to reboot it, then they realized the motherboard was ruined, and they've been working to put our hard drive onto a new server.
We don't expect that any content was lost but when it comes back online, we'll check. It's possible a few Park posts may have gone missing, and we know there were awesome conversations taking place then and we hope you can resume the magic when the site is back online.
None of the links on the right work now. But they will again, soon!
More info as we have it....
The good news is, our site host is giving us December for free - which is important because we had plans to ask you for money today, which is #GivingTuesday.
Our hosting and domain name fees are about $2500 per year; the site mods have been paying more than half of these costs for the last few years, and we bring in a few hundred dollars every year via Google Ad revenue and from people making purchases via our Amazon urls, but we need your support. If you are able to donate ten dollars, twenty dollars, or even fifty dollars or more, it would make a huge impact on FictionAlley's annual costs.
FA founder Heidi8 will double the first eight donations, as well as all donations on December 8, 2016. Also, if we raise $4000 (to cover the next 18 months of costs/fees) by February 28, 2017, all other donations in 2017 will go to hiring a programmer to rebuild FA's hosting system and forums.

that focused on fans as the "New Powers That Be" and talked about Harry Potter, the triumph of fandom, and the future of creativity.
Harry Potter launched a phenomenon that’s seldom acknowledged and barely understood, but that’s as powerful and lasting as the books themselves: the first massive internet-born fandom. That fandom and its legacy have transformed today’s cultural landscape—creating new audiences, nurturing new billion-dollar media properties, and forever changing the way creators and consumers interact with each other and with the world. It's been over 15 years since FictionAlley first went live, and we want to thank all of you for being a part of this fandom, and creating this legacy that continues to have fantastic and magical vibrations and unexpected impacts on so many things in pop culture, society and even politics. Let's keep changing the world!

The Lesson features a deep dive into publishing and licensing procedures, the impact of a well-drafted contract, relationships between J.K. Rowling. her literary agents and Warner Bros. and the legal frameworks of copyrights and trademarks on merchandising and extended content such as Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them and Cursed Child productions and subsequent book productions. What are some of the legal ins and outs associated with all of these projects and who leads it all? Is it Rowling herself, Blair Partnerships, or the Harry Potter Global Franchise Division?

Our friends at the HP Alliance memorialized him, magically; they speak for us:
"This is what we’re about. The idea that story can change the world is at the heart of what we do and how we do it.
"But before we were building an organization, planning campaigns, or sharing in the power of story and the power of love with a community built on both, we were reading and watching Harry Potter. We were being enchanted by actors like Alan Rickman, who brought our very favorite story to life with incomparable commitment and skill. To think about the films is to think about that inimitable sneer, that drawl nobody can ever unhear.
"Those performances and their impact never faded. In the past month alone, we’ve seen references to Alan Rickman’s Snape in puppet shows and lyrics, from Yule Balls to Draco and the Malfoys’ house show. And in the years before that? Too many good times to count. We don’t think Alan could possibly know exactly how many or exactly how grateful we are.
The truest thing Severus Snape ever said was simple: “It’s real for us.” It all is: the message, the memories, the magic. The best way to move forward is to carry that with us.
"If that first potions scene struck fear - or anger - into your heart, if Alan Rickman’s immaculate portrayal made you feel something, to want to do something, to want to be kinder and to never abuse your power over those in your care and to stick it to the man, that was real. It is real. The power of a community coming together in a time of darkness and creating light is real, too. Don’t lose sight of it. Use it to change the world."
FictionAlley was founded on the belief that creativity is magic; Alan - Professor Rickman - showcased creativity and magic in all he did. Our thoughts are with his family and friends today - and also with all of you. Our grief is real, legitimate and worthy of sharing within our fandom community.
And also, FUCK CANCER.

And here is the forum to discuss anything and everything related to Fantastic Beasts.
Our archives already host dozens of fics inspired by JKR's 2001 Fantastic Beasts schoolbook - and we look forward to seeing what the movie - and ancillary stories - inspire!

It was always difficult being Harry Potter and it isn’t much easier now that he is an overworked employee of the Ministry of Magic, a husband and father of three school-age children. While Harry grapples with a past that refuses to stay where it belongs, his youngest son Albus must struggle with the weight of a family legacy he never wanted. As past and present fuse ominously, both father and son learn the uncomfortable truth: sometimes, darkness comes from unexpected places.

We agree with the idea shared by the HPA this month - We want our community and all others like it to be safe, constructive, positive spaces. - so we've read the guidelines at PositiveFandom; we hope that we've always followed the principles and concepts articulated within those statements, and we know you tell us when we don't.
We know that "fandom is home to endless perspectives on and interpretations of a common material," - that concept is why FictionAlley was founded - and if you're interested in signing onto supporting the guidelines too, that would be magical and awesome.

And then, JKR surprised and thrilled us with news of a stage play - Harry Potter & the Cursed Child which she notes is "not a prequel".
It'll be on stage in London at the Palace Theater next summer; we're definitely planning on going!
What about you?

Starting on December 12, JKR will be posting one story a day on Pottermore - and at least one story will be focused on Draco. No word yet on who - or what - the other eleven stories are about but at least one FictionAlley staffer is hoping for Regulus Black.
What characters would you like to see in JKR's "ficlets"?

Where is the good Harry Potter fanfiction hiding? The amazing, well written, fluffy stuff with great characters and moments? I know it must be out there somewhere on ao3 but whenever I try to venture in I can only find... weird, weird stuff. Any help would be greatly appreciated :)
Kellifer_K started the discussion off by asking for recs, and there were some great suggestions (including that people search FA); Heidi wanted to share here what she said over there.
I know that all fandoms have their own natural lifespan but as someone who has spent years involved in Harry Potter fanfiction - and wrote about it for annejamison's FIC book, the fact that people are having a hard time finding Harry Potter fanfic makes my stomach twist.
AO3 went live six years ago (October 3, 2008) today in a very limited beta - but that was already well over a year after the last Harry Potter book had come out. Harry Potter fanfic was very book-centric, even once the films started coming out, and a large proportion of magical HP fanfic was probably posted between the release of Goblet of Fire in 2000 and Order of the Phoenix in the summer of 2003 - it was called The Three Year Summer (although great stories were definitely written well after that, too!)
Because of this, most Harry Potter fanfic isn’t on AO3. People did go back and upload older fics - but out of the 64000 fics with Harry Potter in them on AO3, perhaps 2500 of them are things people uploaded from their archives after 2008. A lot of people had written wonderful fics but left fandom by then, which is why you won’t find Sexy babes from india, but they’re still interesting reads.
Rec lists that were on Geocities are all gone - and most of the links would be broken by now, because people who used to have sites on Angelfire or EZBoard - or who paid for their own domains - have abandoned them by now, but it’s possible to go to Archive.org (no relation to AO3 except both are awesome) if you have a dead link and want to see if the archive of that page is still available somehow. But the rec listd above are terrific resources but everyone will have their own favorites - I was looking for a rec list on Sugarquill but couldn’t find one. FictionAlley’s user recs are all over the Park, and there’s a curated set here.
What should we do to be a better, more user-friendly resource for people to find fics? FA's content management system needs to be updated (but for that we need either volunteer coders willing to Sarah palin pussy - let us know if you can help either way via those links)) but what can we do with what we have?

After three days of tweeting from around Hogsmeade, Muggle London and Diagon Alley, this morning included a surprising and spontaneous chance to visit “both sides of the Wizarding World" without venturing into the Muggle world in between.
The day started with Butterbeer (for breakfast) and a visit with the Sorting Hat. Then I heard - but did not see! - a Thestral at a carriage by Hogsmeade Station, rode the Hogwarts Express to King’s Cross and spotted the Knight Bus - and some Sherlock Holmes books - by The Leaky Cauldron (their sign on the Wizarding side leaks).
I can’t wait to come back for the experience of walking into Diagon Alley with witches and wizards. I still haven’t ridden through Gringotts or seen the Beedle tales performance, nor tried Butterbeer soft-serve ice cream in a cone, and even today there were details I saw that I’d missed before - not just on the Hogwarts Express but, believe it or not, on Forbidden Journey!
So many kudos to Universal for this immersive experience. I can’t wait to show some pics & talk about it at the Harry Potter fan panel at Comic Con, and come back for LeakyCon next month, and again and again with family and friends. This place is perfect. It feels magical and detailed and correct and will inspire fans to think about and talk of and even create, and will inspire those who still haven’t read the books - or are just getting to the age where they want to - to love the Wizarding World.
Next stop, Fantastic Beasts, Jo?
Coming over the weekend, our gallery of photos of detailed elements of the Wizarding World that fill Diagon Alley, Nocturne Alley and Horizontal Alley - we're sure FictionAlley is also around there somewhere with innumerable book shops and art galleries, but we didn't spot an entrance this time. If you can't wait, check us out on Twitter for brief glimpses of the magic.
Note: Some meal and hotel expenses, as well as park admission, were provided by Universal, although all opinions are our own.
